John Washburn (former director of the Providence PD K-9 unit) is the
only shepard breeder I know of. Not sure if he's still doing it or
not. I believe he's in the phone book (Scituate). Might be worth
calling him, if he's not breeding any longer, he can put you in touch
with a reputable breeder in the area.

Be EXTREMELY careful
I have had Shepherds all my life and own two now.
You should define what type of German
Shepherd you want.
If you want a extremely good watch dog and can handle a large boned maniac.
I would recommend a East German- Czechoslovakian bred dog. They will protect
you to the end but they are a real chore to train especially if it us a un-
neutered male.
I own one he is 116 pounds and he could eat a Rotweiller and a few coyotes
for breakfast.
He is a Tasca shepherd. The Tasca line does have some hip problems not bad
but not perfect either.

If you want a easily trained good natured extremely intelligent and decent
watch dog go with a
pure black.
Here is a excellent breeder with dogs with great healthy bloodlines just
over the border in CT

For American bred German Shepherds try morningstar pet resort in Thompson
CT.
They are well bred healthy dogs for the American line.

Most would do well with the shilo variation, but hard to find. More calm,
but larger than most.

Wow! That is some fierce looking dog.

Friends of ours used to have an Alsatian shepherd -- it looked like a
German Shepherd but bigger and furrier. (It was a sissy, though!) This
dog above looks, to me, a bit like their Alsatian. Is there a relationship
in the breeding?

Sort of confusing since Alsatian is simply the British name for what we call
the German Shepard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Shepherd

Huh. That *is* confusing. Our friends used to be quite definite that
theirs was different from a "regular" German shepherd. And he did look
different!

Another legend bites the dust.

Well, In Europe the German Shepherd breed is known as a Alsatian.
The Czech breeding was done for dogs used as border guards.
They are extremely territorial with enormous body strength.
Often puppies that didn't show extreme bravery and aggressiveness were
culled.

Another very good option is to go to German Shepherd rescue in
Massachusetts.
They have some wonderful dogs and they are German Shepard experts.
