Finally found them at the Vermont Country Store. Way overpriced, but the
only current source in the world for this great old product. Better tasting
than the ones I used to buy at Watch Hill too.

Cream Filberts, frequently called "moth balls" due to the way they look also
called snow balls by a few but the size is wrong. They are the size and
color of moth balls.

froogle only gives one result, and you got them there. From the
website:

Cream Filberts Are Back! We Had Them Made Specially for You

For years you've asked us to reintroduce crystallized cream filberts
(also known as "Mothballs" or "Snowballs") into our Store and we
searched until we finally came across a small candy company in upstate
New York that was able to make these candies the old-fashioned way just
for us. The filberts (hazelnuts) are panned in copper kettles until the
whole nut is encased in crystallized sugar, a time-consuming process
that takes days, but one we're sure you'll find well worth the effort.
Whether you prefer to let these sweet treats slowly melt in your mouth
until you get to the nut or simply bite right into them, you won't be
able to resist them. 1lb. bag contains approx. 55 candies.
Sorry! Our Creamed filberts have SOLD OUT for the season. We will have
more next year after Thanksgiving. Please call Vermont Country
Store-they have them.

Oddly enough, the only recipes I find appears to be talking about
something entirely different. A baked cookie , and not a cooked sugar
candy.

Interesting. I have never heard of them. Why not contact Sweenors and
see if they want to try an experiemental run/ batch? Or maybe that
fancy chef on the east side? Um... garrison? thats it.

Good luck.

I knew the man who founded Sweenor's Candy shop. Mr. Sweenor and his son
Bill ran the place in Garden City while Mr. Sweenor taught at Cranston High
East. Nice man and a respected teacher (I was too young to have been taught
by him as he was gone before I entered HS.). I understand Bill runs it
today (unless he has sold out) and they have a second store in Charlestown.
Moth Ball candy is hard to make so it is a factory item typically. (The
candy shop in Westerly bought theirs in bulk from a factory in Chicago.) I
believe the process takes about a week from start to finish. I bought the
Vermont Candy Store item and it is excellent, perhaps the best due to its
sealed packaging preventing it from getting stale.

ITYM Wakefield. Across the way from where Almacs used to be.

No, not in Quo Vadis...behind that, where they made candy. You could
gain weight just by walking in the door and inhaling.

As a biker you should know the eastern terminus of the South County
bike path is just about at Sweenor's doorstep. As soon as we got there
we were enveloped in the smell and debated undoing all of our efforts.
We compromised and got a Starbucks, a very rare indulgence for us
after we calculated that one of our friends spends $80/week there. But
it is a lot of fun coming up with a thirty word coffee order.
